When you walk down the aisle, the allure of a magical and amazing life on the other side is right in front of you. The idea of ‘couple goals’ and yearning for a love like others seems enchanting. However, the reality sets in quickly, revealing that lasting marriages demand time, dedication, compromise, forgiveness, understanding, and love. The internet may discourage, emphasizing the sacrifices, while seasoned couples with wisdom attest to the challenging yet rewarding nature of marriage.
Reflecting on my eight-year journey (our anniversary was just yesterday), the most profound lessons were not about my spouse but more about self-discovery. It became clear that fostering a positive mindset and creating my own happiness were key to reshaping my perspective on marriage.
The recent years of my marriage posed challenges, and at times, I doubted our ability to endure. However, by actively addressing our issues, we not only persevered but also rediscovered the love and fondness we had on the day we exchanged vows in 2016.
In January 2023, a pivotal shift occurred in my mindset about marriage. Despite attending therapy and discussing our relationship, I hadn’t grasped the essential changes needed for our marriage until then. Around March 2023, my spouse and I committed to doing whatever it took to strengthen our bond. This involved therapy, intentional time together for individual and shared growth, setting meaningful boundaries, improving communication, and prioritizing our connection over external opinions. Above all, we placed God at the center of our marriage.
I am genuinely grateful for the transformative mindset shift in my marriage and for choosing to navigate life together, regardless of the challenges. Have you ever experienced a moment that required a mindset shift in your personal or romantic relationships? I would love to hear about the shifts that reshaped your perspective.
